Art for Grownups

In the process of changing some things in the apartment, I have come to realize that I put some strange "art" on my walls. For instance, in my former office I had a free poster my brother got at a conference, a photo taken by another brother's high school girlfriend, and some cards that I "decorated" and framed...in other words, I was decorating with lots of things that were cheap just to cover the blank, cream walls of the apartment. These things were not grown up, and they were really not beautiful. Now that I am a grown up (I'm thirty and having a baby, so that qualifies me, right?), I think I want some real art. I know nothing about art. I have no real sense of anything beyond what I  think is pretty. Here are some spaces that feel inspiring to me:

I never really considered myself an abstract art kind of gal, but I think that might be what I'm leaning towards. Now the trick is just finding something that works on a budget! I would also love something of a relatively large scale. Are any of you art fans? Where do you find affordable art? I could use some direction!
