Just the way you would with your health, it is always a good idea to
get a second opinion. So, I checked out Tim Gunn's list that was once
the inspiration for
Time Gunn's Guide to Style, a makeover show that had a short run.
Tim and DVF overlap a bit, but he does point out a few key items that I feel DVF neglected, such as jeans. How could we exist in a world without jeans?!
The List:
DVF also noted the importance of the little black dress. In other words, if you don't own one, buy it stat.
I love the day dresses from Madewell, but I particularly love this cheetah dress from...wait for it...Target!
Yesterday, I chose a trench as a day coat option. That one was by Banana Republic. Today's is by J.Crew. Both are great stops for classic pieces. This white shirt (which I also believe is a must have) is by Brooks Brothers. Their blouses are wardrobe staples fom women of all ages.
Classic dress pants can take you from an interview to a dinner with friends. A basic, black, bootcut pair is a can't miss.
A universally flattering skirt style is the pencil skirt. Have you
seen Mad Men?
Almost all of these options can be paired with a great blazer. You can go traditional or embellished. I'm wild about this bejeweled tweed number!
Uniqlo has amazingly affordable cashmere in a variety of styles and colors, and one is opening up in Union Square any day now! Just what I need...
If you are going to buy one pair of expensive jeans, buy one in a traditional bootcut, dark wash, with no embellishments. You'll get the most for your money.
You can interpret a "sweat suit alternative" in many ways, but this is my favorite kind of go-to weekend look. I love a boyfriend jean.
Do you have all these must haves or is a shopping trip in your future?
